ALSP-Visayas coordinates
with Salonga Center

With the
theme “Becoming Lawyers with a Conscience”, the Association
of Law Students of the Philippines (ALSP) Visayas coordinated
with the Dr. Jovito R. Salonga Center for Law and Development
for the conduct of its regional conference last October 26-28,
2007.
The ALSP is
a law students’ organization composed of more than 60 law
schools nationwide.
The event
was hosted by the Silliman University College of Law with the
aim of molding future lawyers who have a strong sense of legal
ethics and an undying compassion for the welfare of the marginalized
and the environment.
During the
first day of the event, the Salonga Center sponsored a press conference
with Rep. Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III of the
4th District of Quezon Province. He also chairs the Committee
on Human Rights of the 14th Congress.
The matters
tackled were on extrajudicial killings, writ of habeas corpus,
writ of amparo, the pending Human Rights Compensation Bill, and
among others.
On the other hand, the Salonga
Center also organized an orientation at the Villa Marmarine Resort,
Siquijor, Siquijor in the afternoon of the 28th.
The Director
of the Salonga Center Atty. Mikhail Lee L. Maxino lectured on
the Environmental Law in the Philippine Context, while volunteers
and junior law students of Silliman University Jorge Christian
Cabrido and Christy Ann Marie R. Cong discussed the Current Environmental
Issues and Overview of the Salonga Center, respectively.
The said conference
was attended by law students from Silliman University, University
of San Carlos and University of San Jose - Recoletos in Cebu City
and University of Iloilo, University of San Agustin and Aklan
Catholic College in Panay Island. (by
